Annual Captain Cathal Ryan Scholarship Award 

The Scholarship was launched in 2008 to commemorate and celebrate the life of Captain Cathal Ryan and consists of a 10 year fund of up to €25,000 per year to be awarded to those who are involved in any aspect of social entrepreneurship or non profit leadership in Ireland.  The aim of the scholarship is to support further education and personal development to advance the personal and professional goals of the winning applicants.

Siobhán O’ Donoghue has been Director of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, a national organisation concerned with the rights of migrant workers and their families since 2002. Prior to taking up this position, she worked for many years in youth and community sector organisations in Ireland, ranging from local grass roots like Limerick Travellers Development Group to national organisations and structures like the Community Workers’ Coop.

More recently, Siobhan co-founded Claiming Our Future, a social movement calling for an equal and sustainable Ireland.

Krystian Fikert is founder and CEO of MyMind, formerly known as the Psychological Centre in Dublin (ThePPD).   In 2006, Krystian, a Polish psychologist living and working in Ireland, set up MyMind, to initially address the psychological needs of Polish immigrants in the country. In 2008, Krystian started to expand the service to address the needs of other immigrant communities as well as the native Irish population.   

MyMind's mission is that everyone in Ireland has easy and quick access to community based mental health services.

Michael Barron co-founded BeLonG To in 2003, a national youth service for  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender young people in Ireland. Prior to working here he spent a number of years working with young migrants and homeless young people. He holds a degree from Trinity College Dublin and an MA in Youth & Community Studies from Brunel University in London. Michael has published a number of articles on the experiences of LGBT young people and has been centrally involved in affected social policy change to improve the safety and inclusion of LGBT young people in Ireland.

Seán Coughlan is Co-Founder and Chief Executive of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland, an Irish not-for- profit organisation established to encourage and support the development of social entrepreneurship.

Previously, Seán has worked as a scientific researcher, teacher and a senior manager within the IT sector. As an entrepreneur, he has also spent time developing business opportunities in Turkey and Ireland. Seán has been actively involved in the not-for-profit sector over the past eighteen years in both leadership and advisory capacities with a number of voluntary organisations. Sean is a member of the Board of Management of Glasnevin Educate Together School and The Wheel, and organisation which represents not-for-profit organisations in Ireland. He holds a First Class Honours in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin.
