Children and Families

We recognise that living in difficult circumstances often creates a cycle of disadvantage for families and children. Our aim is to break that cycle. To do this, we invest in organisations that provide Parenting Programmes and Direct Family Support, using proven early intervention and prevention models that are ready to replicate and scale and in organisations that advocate for childrens rights and to end child poverty.

Children and Families Goals

  1. Make children’s rights real
Children's rights have been made more real by inclusion in the Constitution and are evident in a critical mass of communities in Ireland
Separated kids are treated equally in the Irish care system
  2. Make effective family support programmes available nationally

 Our portfolio of investments is:

Barnardos
Barnardos supports children whose well-being is under threat, by working with them, their families and communities, and by campaigning for the rights of children. Barnardos’ mission is to support families, and challenge communities, society and government to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child. Barnardos is Ireland’s leading independent children’s charity.

Children's Rights Alliance
Established in 1995, the Children's Rights Alliance is a coalition of non-governmental organisations concerned with the rights and welfare of children and young people in Ireland. The overall aim of the Alliance is to secure changes in legislation, policies and services, to ensure the realisation of the principles and provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in Ireland. Ireland ratified this international agreement in 1992.

Longford Women’s Link
The Longford Women’s Centre was established in January 1996, and has become the primary campaigner for the rights of women in the county. Many Longford women experience poverty and a lack of development opportunities, while their geographical isolation renders them a silent minority when social and economic issues are being discussed at national level.

The Centre is a welcoming and dynamic resource, which provides many services, to women and their families. These activities are underpinned by a desire that local women should play a more active role in the social, economic, cultural and political life of the community.
